City Seeking Long-Term Solution for Low Water Levels

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) – The City of Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department has initiated a project at West Guth Park to address the low water level in the detention pond caused by the severe drought impacting the region. The pond serves as a stormwater detention pond for runoff.

Engineers are working with Corpus Christi Water (CCW) on a proposed groundwater well that would feed into the detention pond to maintain a specific water level. Weather permitting, the design and construction phase will be completed in August.

The City cannot refill the detention pond while under Stage 3 water restrictions.

Additionally, Type 1 reclaimed water cannot be used in the pond, as it may contaminate the groundwater. “We acknowledge the public's concerns regarding wildlife at the pond,” said Captain Wesley Growth, Texas Parks & Wildlife Region 8. “However, wildlife are resilient creatures that will seek out available water sources. They possess an admirable ability to adapt to their environment.”
